About Me
I am a native of the greater St. Louis metropolitan area and am a recent Dance BFA and Journalism graduate at the University of Iowa. From a young age, I’ve been interested in pursuing a career that incorporates both of my passions for dance and writing. I have been trained in numerous techniques such as Release technique, Limon, Horton, Cunningham, some Gaga, Cecchetti, improvisation and various somatic practices. I have also produced visual storytelling works through video and screendance. Through my experiences as a student, I understand how these forms, dance and writing, influence the work I make whether it be professionally in the arts or in journalism. I have performed works by Melinda Jean Myers, Tony Orrico, Stephanie Miracle, Brian Enos, Marc Macarnas, Jessie Factor, Jacob Henss and Consuming Kinetics Dance Company. I am currently located in Chicago and working with Alluvion Dance Chicago.
Professional, Artistic Statement
In my works, whether it is dance or writing, I strive to research and unpack new perspectives that have the ability to advance access, visibility and understanding. I believe art is one of the most powerful ways to build community. I value using narrative as a way to present embodiments of histories that have the capabilities to help us further understand who we are and why we are. I believe every individual has a story to be empowered by that is worth telling. I am constantly searching for the human element. I want to put the human at the forefront. Through the human, we can uncover truth and authenticity.
My performance and work investigate what I like to call being a-live. I want my body and mind to be so micro-focused to the sensations within the body in real-time and space for the most organic performance. I use the body as the source for the subject matter and movement generation. I employ improvisational scores and patience in my practice. I’m currently investigating what it is like to live, practice and perform in this space of awareness. I am also curious about the roles of character and self that I can present in performance and their impact. I see power within obtaining agency and authenticity in the vulnerable spaces of performance. I aim to bring value to moments and habits that we would normally try to ignore in performance such as falling, tripping, slipping, yawning— it’s all apart of who we are as humans and how we live in our bodies. I aspire for my performance and work to shift perspectives, inspire, engage viewers and promote community.
